The subject of originality is a tricky one. However, I find it bazaar as you that people would question whether your stories are original. Whoever these people are, they need to go away. Way to cheapen what you're doing before you even get finished.
It's not like these people have read what you're working on. I can honestly say I haven't had anyone ask me that. I can't say that my response would be positive to whoever thought it'd be a good idea.
The reference to the fact that you might be writing a fan fiction-esk story makes me laugh. Especially when someone references it to 'like 50 Shades of Grey'. Without getting into my opinions on that book, anyone who knows you is well aware on your lack of 'desire' for erotica. That is, with the exception of Kit Rocha and you are fucking welcome for that.
In their defence though, I think non writers are looking for a point of reference. I do have people ask me what I'm writing, and could it be like 'blah'. I don't interpret this as questions of originality, rather they haven't read my story and therefore are trying to classify it against something they are familiar with.
For example, most non-writers give me a blank look when I say I write Urban Fantasy. Then I have to explain what it is because they've either interpreted 'fantasy' as bow chicka wow-wow fantasies, or taken down the line of Game of Thrones. Not saying there is anything wrong with either, just that they are not Urban Fantasy.
I'm a huge believer of art inspiring art, but I don't think that's what these people were hinting at. To question the originality of your words makes them an idiot in my opinion. They are obviously not familiar with your work, and that is their loss.
