I thought I might do something a little different on here and do a few recommendations. These are some of my favourite things. Some recent finds, some not. Each still very worthy in their own awesomeness. To keep this post from being longer than a Monday in hell, I'll keep it to two recommends for each section.
BOOKS:
Kill Your Boss by Shane Kuhn
The speel:
If you're reading this, you're a new employee at Human Resources, Inc.
Congratulations. And condolences. At the very least, you're embarking on a career that you will never be able to describe as dull. You'll go to interesting places. You'll meet unique and stimulating people from all walks of life. And kill them. You will make a lot of money, but that will mean nothing to you after the first job.
Assassination, no matter how easy it looks in the movies, is the most difficult, stressful, and lonely profession on the planet.
Even when you're disguised as an intern.
John Lago is a hitman. He has some rules for you. And he's about to break every single one.
Me:
A brilliantly witty read. I was hooked from page one.
Don't Fence Me In: Grassroots Wisdom from a Country Girl by Rachael Treasure
The Speel:
Take your life by the horns with this gorgeous collection of feel-good stories, sayings and life lessons. Bestselling author Rachael Treasure serves up a dose of pure positivity with a side of down-to-earth cowgirl wisdom.
Accompanied by charming illustrations, these bite-sized morsels of home-grown advice will brighten the most monotonous day and leave you feeling inspired and at peace with the world.
Get in touch with nature, appreciate the little things, be mindful of your surroundings and learn to love your life with this witty anthology of optimistic thinking.
Me:
I ignored Rachael's advice with this one, and read the entire thing on a flight from Canberra to Brisbane. Hilarious and thought provoking. One you can read over and over. I got the cute little hard cover, I don't think this is a book you can appreciate as well as an ebook, but that's my two cents.
TELEVISION:
Breaking Bad
The Speel:
To provide for his family's future after he is diagnosed with lung cancer, a chemistry genius turned high school teacher teams up with an ex-student to cook and sell the world's purest crystal meth.
Me:
This isn't a show that I discovered recently. However now that's it's finished it's a perfect binge watch. Guaranteed you won't be disappointed. AND as an added bonus the show's creator Vince Gilligan will be in Sydney on May 1st as a part of the Sydney Writers Festival. You can bet your ass I'm gonna be there.
Sons of Anarchy
The Speel:
A man in his early 30s struggles to find a balance in his life between being a new dad and his involvement in a motorcycle club.
Me:
This show is my favourite of all time. The creator, Kurt Sutter is my creative hero. The series wraps up this year at seven seasons, staying true to Kurt's original arc for the show. There are no 'filler' episodes with Sons. It's intense, violent, and will evoke emotions you never knew you had.
To boot, creator Kurt Sutter has a YouTube channel where he vlogs to the fans every week with what is happening in the world of SOA. Keeping hard core fans like myself engaged all year round, even when the show isn't on air.
YouTube:
Cherry Dollface: Cherry is an American Pin Up model. She does videos on vintage and pin up hair, make-up, and style. She makes it all look easy. This talented woman is worth checking out if you're interested in those things.
SourceFed NERD: A creation from Phil Defranco and run by some of his nerdy SourceFed team this channel covers EVERYTHING nerdy. My favourite series that they do is #TableTalk. Hilarious.
Movies:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
I was lucky enough to see this early (last Sunday) and O.M.G. #EPICNESS. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but if you're a Marvel fan it's a MUST see.
Prisoners
This movie did not get enough credit I don't think. Regardless of whether you have kids or not, it's impossible to watch the movie and not feel something. Hugh Jackman at his best in my opinion.
