Checking in on The Plan

So Peter Ball did a blog post yesterday that was great. If you don’t know who Peter is, then make sure you check him out at petermball.com. He went through his list of writing goals for 2014 and checked in on where he was at. April seems like a good time to do that, so I’m borrowing his idea. Borrowing in the sense that if he wants it back, he’ll have to fight me for it. Kidding. He’s a nice guy so I’m hoping he’ll be happy to share it with me.

In January I blogged about what I planned to achieve in 2014. Some were writing goals, others were life related. Either way, it’s time to see how I’m trekking.

  1. Plan less
This I have been achieving so far. I say as I check in with my plan. Or perhaps I’ve been replaced by a pod person. The year is young, so I’m not calling a win on this one yet.

  1. Live More
I’m going well with this one. I had a little holiday in March, and have another little trip on the horizon come May.

  1. Finish The Shadow Order
*laughs* Goddess. I’m at the fourth re-write of this thing. Let’s just chalk it up as a ‘work in progress’.

  1. Finish Dead Man’s Dance #2
This has stalled. I’ve written about half of it, and a third of book #3 in the series. However I’ve stepped away to work on a new shiny idea I am tentatively calling The Victorian. I’m determined to get a first draft of this new story down before I go back to Dead Man’s Dance. Though I’m constantly researching for the Dead Man’s Dance series, the topics of witchcraft, bikers, and vodou are truly a passion of mine. So I’m not worried about this. The Dead Man’s Dance series is my staple. There is no Alysha without this series.

  1. Improve Buried Alive
This one is hard. Buried Alive is the first in the Dead Man’s Dance series and is currently under submission with my dream publisher for the series. So I can’t work on the MS until I hear back officially from them. The best case scenario for this book will be that I get to work with their team to take the novel to the next level. Realistically, I have plans for if it’s rejected. Okay so maybe point one about less planning is a joke.

  1. Earn that contract
Honestly. The longer I do this, the more I learn. It’s a never ending learning curve. Earning the contract isn’t a one year goal, it’s long term.

  1. Get my motorcycle licence
Okay, so there’s a catch here. I write about motor cycles in my Dead Man’s Dance series. I personally love them and what they represent.

*WARNING IT’S ABOUT TO GET DEEP*

I also have this uncanny feeling that I will die young. I will die young and it’ll be on the road. How do I know this? I can’t explain it. Call it instinct, though I’d love to be wrong. JFS. So getting my motorcycle licence comes with inherent tension. I know they’re dangerous. I personally know more people who have died from motorcycle accidents, than have lived to continue riding. This is the reality of the machines.
All that aside, I still intend on getting my licence which is why it’s on the list. Whether I’ll ride regularly will be another story. Confused? Welcome to my head.

  1. Invest in Me
I think I’m tracking okay here. Next month I’m going to Sydney to listen to Vince Gilligan (creator of Breaking Bad) talk about creating an epic story and screen writing. In my opinion, this will be a great investment in my career. Seriously, have you seen Breaking Bad?? *straps you to the couch and puts on the DVDs*

All in all I don't think I'm doing too bad. Sure, I've added another MS to the list but meh. Live life dangerously and all that.

Note: If you're wondering the difference between vodou and voodoo check out my blog post on the topic of Voodoo, Vodou, and Hoodoo.
